DO YOU THINK THAT SHOPPING IS AN ADDICTION? (FINAL VERSION)

More and more, there are a lot of people who need to go shopping like an addiction, an illness. In my view, there are two reasons that can explain this fact:
Firstly, I think that advertising has an important repercussion on this fact with their slogans. They show  people that their products are the newest and the coolest so everybody wants to have that garment. They need to have it, to show to world that they are the coolest, the most modern. Without those objects, they feel empty, depressive, as if they were missing something in their lives. They rely on shopping like  alcoholics rely on alcohol.
Secondly, most of the people who go shopping do it to hide something that they miss, people who have been  stricken by something. They try to solve it with better clothes, modern bags or new shoes, but this satisfaction, only last for a short period of time.
To sum up, I think that solve your problems with shopping, alcohol or something like that is not the solution, so we need to help  people to stop doing these things.

Tattoo removal (FINAL VERSION)

Tatto removal is when someone get's tired of their tattoo and decide to remove it. This proces involves going to the hospital where they will remove it using a laser machine. People tend to remove their tattoos because of work. Employers will give a job to someone without visible tattoos, before giving it to someone with visible tattos. These visible tattoos tend to be on hands or on necks. Many people have trouble finding jobs because of their tattoos. Depending on what job your looking for, it doesn't always matter if you have tattoos, such as construction working. On the other hand, if you're looking for a job in an office, you're more likely to get a job if you have no visible tattoos. In my opinion, I think that it shouldn't really matter, at the end of the day it's the work that you do that matters, the tattoos don't represent the knowledge you have, and they don't make you a less intelligent person.

Shopping addiction. Corrected

Nowaday the sales, above all, after Christmas, is when shops reduce prices of expensive articles, this produces/ causes large/ long queues, moreover, a lot of people are waiting all night or in sleeping bags, to buy cheap goods.

On the one hand, most people when they go shoping, needs/ when most people go shopping, they need to buy something, although they don't need it, only to take up in the wardrop/ wardrobe. But they buy for/ because of  television advertising on TV, etc...
On the other hand some people don't know that they could have a problem with shopping like alcoholics. These people sometimes ... bankrupt, because they buy much more than they can. People have an additction when it happens.

In my opinion sales are a cheat created by large companies who/ that only worry about earning money.

House swapping (Final Version)

House swapping is getting more and more usual mostly on families of United States and Britain. It consists of an arrangement between two different families, mostly known people from yours or another country, where they exchange their houses for a holiday or a determinate period of time, with the objective of spending holidays somewhere away from your house and disconnect from your environment, and take care of the house of the other family, while they do the same with yours.

On the one hand, it could be a good opportunity for one family to go on holiday somewhere away for some days and that want to be sure that there is another family who they rely on that is looking after their house while they're on holiday as well . They can enjoy a new place, and know a little bit more about another environment.

On the other hand, you you have to make sure that you exchange your house with a reliable family in order to know for sure that you will take care of their house as the other family will too, because if you don't know what the other family is like, it could be a complete disaster and then you might regret your decision.

To sum up, I think it's a good idea to make a house exchange on holidays, to live a different situation than normal for a few days, but in my case, I don't think I would ever swap my house for a holiday, because I would get worried to be careful all the time  not to break anything in the other house, and I don't like other people to be in my house without my presence because I would feel uncomfortable that another family that maybe I don't know, is staying in my house.

Friendship

Hello my name is Joel Vilarnau and I would like to talk you about my friend Dani Salas who I haven’t seen for 2 years, but I know he will always be my friend.

I haven’t seen my friend Dani in all this time because he moved to Bolivia to live. Nor him neither his friends wanted that Dani left Menorca for ever. However, his mother forced Dani because she found a job and she think that her son would study more in Bolivia when Dani wouldn’t have distractions.
In these two years I have spoken to him sometimes due to being a different continents. When we talk, he says me that he misses us and he would like staying with us. The truth is that we also. I knew Dani 8 years ago and I haven’t forgotten it yet and I don’t think that I will do it.
However, now and I hope that always, we will speak to much more as he has downloaded whatsapp. I believed that speaking to people from another country by whatsapp cost money but no. I have been very happy since Dani contacted with me by whatsapp.

I can still recall the holidays I spent in America when I was young. After working very hard for a long time, I finally managed to earn enough money to spend a few months in America, which was the thing I wanted the most since I was a child. Then, I flew alone to New York, looking forward to seeing new places and meeting interesting people.

When I arrived there, I was impressed by the enormous dimensions of the city. I walked and walked around the city for a few days, visiting some of the most important places in the city such as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. One day, while I was walking on the street, I saw a child crying next to a basketball court. He was about 15 years old, black-skinned and very tall. His name was Michael and, when I asked him why he was crying, he answered me that his basketball shoes had just broken and that he didn’t have enough money to buy a new pair, so he couldn’t play anymore. I felt  very sorry and I decided to give him money to get a new pair. He was very happy and he promised to me that he would reward me some day. From then, we got on very well and started being good friends, but I had to return to my country, so we had to separate.

It was about 20 years since I last saw Michael. I had no news from him and I hadn’t seen him for ages, but I knew that he would always be my friend. Nevertheless, one day, while I was watching a sports program on television, I saw a report that made me smile: a young basketball genius called Michael Jordan had just won his first ring as an NBA champion.

MY LOVER

When I was 20 years old, I started to go out with a girl from my university, we studied the
same thing, medicine. I met her the first day of university, and we fell in love, it was love at
first sight.

The first moths everything was fine, I loved her so much, and we used to do a lot of things together:
go to the cinema, go to the theatre, study medicine… Suddenly, every time I called her, she
didn’t answer the phone, and I didn’t know why. I tried to see her again to talk about what
had happened, but it was impossible. She was my first love and it took me three months to get
over.
 .
After a few years I discovered her in a web and what had happened with her, I couldn’t believe
what this page said, this web said that she had died in a car accident. I tried to phone her
family and her friends, but it was too late. After knowing this I haven’t been the same

Long-distance relationship don’t work

Years ago I met a good looking, slim, tall and very educated boy. He asked me to go out and so we started to know each other better. We had been going out together for 6 months when he decided to study a carer so he went to Barcelona; however, we continued our relationship.

Thanks to the new technologies, we could communicate, although, we lived far away from each other, we felt near. Moreover, he used to come here every time it was possible for him and I felt very happy but one day he came on holiday and we met to have a meal in a nice restaurant by the sea as we used to. I felt so loved that I was very surprised to notice my boyfriend looked so different (from he was). While we were having dinner I asked him why he was so serious and he told me he had realized that he wasn’t so in love with me as before because of the distance, but he would like us to continue to be friends.

After that I was heard-broken but thanks to my friends I feel a little better and at the moment I realize that long-distance relationship don’t work.

Hobbies? (Final Version)

Television, newspapers, magazines and other media pay too much attention to the personal lives of famous people such as public figures and celebrities because people like these news and buy magazines like “Hola!” and others to know what celebrities are doing with their lives.

Firstly, I think that a lot of people buy these magazines, and they spend a lot of money, consequently they improve the economy.
Secondly, this kind of news entertains a lot of people and some of them enjoy reading them.
On the other hand, celebrities don’t have any personal life because it is shown in magazines. Therefore, these reports replace other news like the global warming in newspapers or magazines, as a result, people don’t know about the problems of the earth or others which are more important than the personal lives of famous people.
Some people think that magazines, newspapers or television programmes which show the personal lives of famous people are stupid . Normally people who see these programmers are women, but some men watch them as well.

To sum up, I think that people are very nosy  and they like to know what celebrities do at all times, and I agree with the fact that televisions, newspapers and other media  show us the personal lives of famous people, because if these news didn't exist, maybe people would use  different methods to know what celebrities are doing.

Purchases as a lifestyle (Final Version)

Now a days, because of the global crisis, shopping is a compulsive act for a lot of people; and why could shopping an addiction?

Some people are used to going shopping when they are depressed or nervous, after a time, they need to buy something every time they are depressed or nervous. This behavior is considered an addiction, because they need to shop and they feel better after having done it. These type of people need help from psychologists or doctors. But they are a little group of people. Other people are affected by the media, which shows them lot of stupid products and finally people buy unnecessary things. In addition, the sales are the main reason for shopping, because when we see an offer, we think that it is a bargain and buy it. Furthermore if the sales are at Christmas, the purchases are bigger. After buying something, some people feel bad and worse before having bought it, because they regret having bought it without any reason.

I think that some people need help to overcome their addiction, but shopping isn’t always an addiction, when we buy something without reason, it could be because of propaganda. In my opinion, we shouldn’t pay attention to publicity; because publicity wants us to buy their products.

euronews reporter : Catalonia rises on a wave of independence

VIDEO WITH SCRIPT: Euronews reporter : Catalonia rises on a wave of independence

"I am part of Catalan culture, and it is very important to me."
"We have a very open way of seeing the world. For many years  Catalan culture was undermined, I feel that if we do not fight for it, that will happen again, we will lose our way of seeing the world."

This evening rehearsal has a special emphasis. The group will take part in a concert the next day promoting independence for Catalonia.

It's a theme that brought a million and a half people on to the streets of Barcelona, the capital of the autonomous region of Spain, during the Diada, the National Day of Catalonia last September.

Initiatives are springing up everywhere in the separatist region. The village of Sant Pere de Torello, became famous by declaring itself an independent Catalan territory. The pediment of the town hall has for a year and a half been flying the Catalan independence flag, but not the Spanish one.

"Currently, there are 180 town halls that have the flag of independence flying permanently from their balconies,". Separatists decry the state system of fiscal redistribution, including public spending in Catalonia which is well below the taxes they pay.

"We live in a state of national emergency, with an unemployment rate of 22.5 percent of the population here. Catalonia pays 16 billion euros annually to the state, which does not amount to any form of services or investment in Catalonia. We have to have this showdown with the Spanish government,"
Catalonia is among the richest regions in Spain, and it pays the equivalent of eight percent of GDP to the state. It is also one of the most indebted. Failure to negotiate an agreement with the Spanish government to give Catalonia fiscal sovereignty, has led the president of the Regional Government, Artur Mas, to call for early elections and a referendum on independence.

That would require reform of the Spanish Constitution, which does not permit independence, and of course steps to obtain international recognition.

"If Catalonia gets independence, it will be a state outside the European Union, and will have to apply for entry into the EU. To gain admission, provided that no member state objects, will require a very long process,"

Economist Oriol Amat believes it is a theoretical question.
"I can't imagine that the EU wants to keep out a state that brings money into the European Union and is very pro European Union and in which the EU has invested heavily in the past."
It's a question which not least concerns some Catalan businesses who fear the effect of a possible exit from the euro, and especially a deterioration in trade relations with Spain.
Some large companies have threatened to move their headquarters from Barcelona, if there was independence. None of those euronews contacted agreed to talk. Only this small publisher opened the door to us. , "About 80 percent of the billing and the company's sales are in the rest of Spain. We would at least in the short term lose all those customers, and that would very quickly force the business to close. Trading outside Spain, and the European Union, our products would be taxed. Moreover, our customers tell us that if Catalonia became independent, they would look for other suppliers, in their own country."

This family business is not concerned about economic nationalism. The company is riding on the wave of independence. Its, "signature" product is the Catalan flag of independence.
"We have seen a fairly strong increase in sales. Every year, we produce large stocks, but this year was a record. There are people who were queuing outside the company to buy the independence flag," .
Beyond the niche markets, will the Catalan, "label" be able to cope with the political uncertainties which generate the debate on independence?

Tourism, a pillar of the Catalan economy, fears neither boycott nor the loss of capital.
“For the first few months of the year, the figures are satisfactory with an increase in tourists from abroad of 11.4% and especially an increase in spending by visitors. Regarding foreign investment, the director general for tourism has several projects on the way. None of the investors expressed concerns or indicated that political issues could slow or paralyze these projects, ‘cause you know, business is business.

The attraction of Catalonia to foreign investors should it become independent, raises questions. But speculation focusses primarily on the impact of  a likely boycott by sections of the Spanish market , which buys half of all the products which are sold outside the Catalonia region.
The question is whether this region of 7 and half million people can be viable among the 20 most competitive countries in the world. There are 14 that have less than 7 million.

If employers believe that Catalonia needs to amend the tax system detrimental to the region’s competitiveness, opinions differ on the question of independence, the likelihood in terms of which are still unclear. The priority is elsewhere, insists the Chief Economist of Catalonia’s federation of employers. With or without independence, we will continue to have problems of funding and increased the tax burden and it’s that which we will focus and that’s where we want to see our politicians help our country out of the crisis.

It is a crisis that if Catalonia did go at alone would create a hangover, admits this small producer of wine and cava, the Catalan champagne. He will not suffer and believes the wine growing sector will avoid a boycott  as the company sells its products in Catalonia and outside Spain. He is confident about the ability of Catalan to rebound if indeed it gains independence. If Catalonia is separated from Spain, it would be a challenge. If it goes well, we can go forward and if there are problems and things go wrong, we can no longer blame Madrid because we will have caused the problems. To look over the bad times, I recommend a small glass of cava. That always works, it always helps to see life in a philosophical and joyful way and surely we will then get out of this problematic situation. The ongoing wrangle between Madrid and Barcelona raises questions and debate beyond the borders of Spain. To the backing of the crisis, the wind of separatism is blowing through Europe, from Catalonia to Scotland through Belgium questioning the future of European integration.

From a European perspective, I think it would be harmful. Catalonia would be an example for other national minorities and other countries to imitate and there would be a fragmentation in the European Union which is already fragmented.

Over a million protesters demand Catalonian independence

 AFP Photo/Josep Lago
A million and a half people took to the streets of Barcelona, according to police estimates, to demand independence for the autonomous Spanish region of Catalonia as the country as a whole faces crippling debt.

At least one train and more than 1,000 coaches were chartered to bring supporters from all over the region to the march. The mob filled the streets with red and yellow Catalan flags, rallying under the slogan "Catalonia, a new European state," chanting “what do the crowds want? A new European state! What do the people want? An independent Catalonia!"

A swelling unemployment rate combined with financial instability have fueled the secessionist spirit. Polls published on Tuesday show that 46.4% support the independence bid – twice as many as in 2008, when the financial crisis began, writes The Guardian.

The autonomous Spanish community, whose economy is bigger than the entirety of neighbouring Portugal's, accounts for a fifth of Spanish output.

But it is burdened by the austerity cuts put forth by the Spanish and European governments in response to the global economic crisis that has left one in four Spaniards jobless. http://rt.com/news/catalonian-national-day-protest-independence-925/

The earth is having problems caused by human activities. In order to solve that, I think that we should try to be greener.

Firstly, we should try to waste less energy, for example, we could have a shower instead of having a bath. With this measure, at the end of the year we have saved lot of water. Another thing we could do is wasteing less heating at home, for example, I think that we could wear a pullover instead of  a T-shirt with a higher heating. I'm not saying that we have to live like 50 years ago, but we can live well wasting less energy.

Secondly, I think that there are a lot of products which are made for a certain periode of time and after that they broke up. An example is  in this times, Christmas, are electronic toys. They are newer and coller than the others, so many childrens want them for Christmas, but after a year more or less they broken and the childrens want another one. This is a bussines estrategy because,  like this, bussines men earn more money. In my view, I think we could solve tis problem buying another kind of toys, for example puzzles, construction games or  handmade toys.

To sum up, the best way to help the earth the  three "R": reduse, reuse and recycle.

CATALONIA SEEKS INDEPENDENCE FROM SPAIN

Before watching the video read the vocabulary:

Pave the way: be the first to do sth (allanar/ abrir el camino, ser pioneros)
Be better off: be in more favourable circumstances ( estar mucho mejor)
Run out of: have none left / use up supplies of sth (quedarse sin, agotar)
Galvanize: stir to action / stimulate into activity (impulsar, mobilizar)
Forward: send, transmit ( enviar, remitir, reenviar)
To go it alone: to do anything without the assistance of one's former associates/  If you go it alone, you do something without any help from other people. ( they are ready to go it alone: to become independent)
GDP : Gross domestic product. (PIB: product interior bruto). Market value of all recognized final goods and services produced within a country in a given period of time. GDP per capita is often considered an indicator of a country's standard of living
Work out well: turn out well / will be all right (ir bien, salir bien)
Take into account: consider (tener en cuenta)
Secede: make a formal withdrawal of membership: (separarse)
Remain: continue to be (permanecer)
Highly: extremely (sumamente, extremadamente)
Indebted: owing money (endeudado)

Watch the video and try to answer the following questions:

  • What’s special about Catalonia?
  • How do separatists think they would be better?
  • What’s happened to the regional government?
  • Give an example that indicates that Catalan people think the are ready to be independent.
  • Would Catalonia be better in GDP than Spain?
  • What could happen if Catalonia became independent? What would the consequences be?

They have their own language, their own flag, and on Sunday, citizens of Catalonia could be paving the way to having their own country. Catalonia is Spain’s wealthiest region. Separatists there say they would be better off cutting ties with Madrid and the rest of Spain and local elections Sunday could put those separatists in power. The BBC reports:
“As Catalonia’s economic crisis has worsened, the regional government has almost run out of money.  That has galvanized support for Catalan nationalist parties. The small town of Galifa, near Barcelona , has even decided to send its federal tax money to the regional government instead. It’s purely symbolic  since the region will just forward the money on to the federal level but it’s another sign that Catalonians  think they are ready to go it alone.
According to financial services group Credit Suisse, Catalonia on its own would be comparable in GDP per capita to the average  European Union nation . But Spain, having lost its richest region, would drop to the likes of Greece and Portugal.
Sounds like independence would work out well for Catalonia, but the Washington Post says that doesn’t take all the economic consequences into account.  If the region did formally secede, it might have to leave the euro and the EU, at least temporarily… Leaving the euro could cause a lot of economic disruption and Catalonia’s regional government remains highly indebted.

Do you think Shopping is an addiction? Do people always need the things they buy when they go shopping? What about you? (FINAL VERSION)

In the last few years, experts have discovered a new type of addiction which has been called “fashion victim”. This term is used when we refer to someone who is always changing his dressing style, and consequently buying a lot. This might be surprising for most of the people, but not for me. Some months ago I realized that I was a “fashion victim”, since that moment I started going to the psychologist. Currently I can control myself and I’m going to give you some tips.

First of all, you should make a list of the things you’ve planned to buy so as not to start catching a lot of things. If you want to buy a little whim, there’s no problem.

Secondly, try not to go mad due to the sales. Pay attention very carefully to the prices and the offers and don’t be swindled. Do not buy unnecesary things, overcome the temptations! You must learn to avoid the stupid fashion.

In conclusion, I think people must regulate their feelings and be prudent.

Illness!(final version)

Societies  are always changing, nowadays everybody has a lot of clothes. We don't wear the same clothes for two days and underwear clothes are changed at least twice a day. We live in a materialistic society and a lot of people can afford to buy more clothes than they need.
People buy something because they think that it will change their life. Advertising makes products look better or make us believe that they are better than they are actually. In fact I don't go shopping very often, but I sometimes buy something which I think is necessary at that moment and then I realise that I have wasted money. I have a lot of clothes because I don't like wearing the same clothes every day.
In conclusion, we have to know that products don't change our life and money doesn't make us happier but it helps.

ARE WE ADDICTED TO BUYING? (CORRECTED)

Nowadays, the fact of going to a shop and spending our money there  is something normal; that’s because we are addicted to buying new things whenever we can. In my view, that’s a wrong way to live.

At first/ Firstly/ In the first place, I think that our lives are based on consumption. The big companies convince us to buy their products with impressive advertisements that make us spend a lot of money. But the fact is that when we buy something, we really feel better than before. On the other hand, buying things is a necessity, because we always need something: food, toys, clothes… and we cannot avoid buying them.

To sum up, I’ll answer the question. In my opinion, most people are addicted to shopping because they are always buying things that they don’t need the whole day . But in the last years, the number of shopping addicts has decreased due to the economic situation.

Shopping (final version)

Everyday, lots of peple go to the mall centre, spends the day going from store to store or simply buy for fun. Shopping has become a way of life. We are the whole day in front of the TV watching commercials that make us think that we need the products that they show.

In my opinion, I think that shopping can become an addiction, because, when some people buy (No matter what they buy), they feel better. They use shopping like a therapy, a medicine or even a drug. On the other hand, shopping is a way of life, I mean, you earn your money and then you spend it buying all kind of things (food, clothes, gadgets...). The problem is that peolple sometimes buy things that they don't need because they have seen the commercials and they think that they can't live without the product that is announced.

To conclude, I think that shopping not necessarily becomes an addiction if you ... only things that you need or if you don't go shopping often, but the problem is people buy things because they have seen in the commercials and they think that they can't live without them.

SHOPPING ADDICTION (final version)

Nowadays there are a lot of people who like shopping all kind of things, such as clothes, perfume, toys, bicycles and lots of other things. But sometimes shopping can become an addiction and I totally agree.

Firstly, when people go shopping sometimes they really don’t buy what they need and finally these things aren’t used. Therefore, if you open the wardrobe in any house you could  probably find some  clothes with the gift tag. Secondly, on  important dates such as Christmas, people buy without specific reason. Finally, some people are addicted to  buying and this is  for some people an illness. When a person has a little money, he needs to buy anything without a reason, because of this illness. Sometimes these people usually hide the object that they have bought because they feel guilty and never used it.

Personally, I think that a person who suffers this addiction needs some help. Moreover, I know a person with this illness and I can see how she usually buys unnecessary things although she hasn’t enough money.

SHOPPING (CORRECTED)

Everybody sometimes go / goes shopping but do they really need new things? In my point of view/ In my view, nowadays, shopping is an addiction because a lot of people needn’t new things.

Every year fashion changes and in the end people go to buy/ go and buy new clothe/ clothes but some people buy too many things which aren't/ are useless or which  they don't need it/- . Normally, this type of people usually buy expensive things because after that, they feel well. Also these people enjoy telling their friends about the things that they have bought. Personally, I am not addicted to going shopping although I like buying new clothes only when it is necessary. If I need a T-shirt, I go to/ and buy it but I don’t go shopping like it was/ as if it were an obligation.

Consequently, most people are addicted to shopping because they have the necessity to have more and new things.
