ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SUPERMARKETS

Nowadays we've got the opportunity to buy everything we want and everything we need going to supermarkets. There we can find a lot of different products, and most of them are very cheap.

Supermarkets have got a lot of advantages, for example, you can find a lot of products and choose the cheapest. On the other hand, supermarkets give you a lot of discounts, many times it is good for you because you can buy more things or part of the products that you have bought are free.

But supermarkets have got many disadvantages as well. Many times when you buy something you think that it is on special offer, but it is not true, because you must buy the same product twice if you really want to get a discount. Many times most of the food displayed is about to be past its sell-by date, so if you don't eat this food in a few days then you will have to throw it away.

I think that it is true that supermarkets have a lot of advantages, because you can buy a lot of things, but many times supermarkets make small shops close and many of the products aren't fresh or have a good quality.

BUYING IN SUPERMARKETS

Nowadays there are a lot of supermarkets in cities. Now there are more supermarkets than little shops and which has some advantages and some disadvantages.

On the one hand it is easy to buy in supermarkets and there are a lot of different kinds of food. For this reason, you can find everything you want. And also prices are more economic than in little shops because you can find own labes. Furthemore, you can go by car because supermarkets always have a car park.

On the other hand, it is slow to buy in supermarkets because they are huge and sometimes there are too many people. An other disatvantage is that sutomers can't get individual attention because supermarkets are very large. Moreover, going to supermarkets is very tiring besides the temperature changes when you go to buy fish or other fresh food.

In my opinion, supermarkets are necessary nowadays but we shouldn't forget little shops because it is not always better to buy in supermarkets. Little shops have a lot of advantages because food normally are more healthy and you can found products faster.

SHOPPING IN SUPERMARKETS

Nowadays, people don't have much money to spend on treats or useless products as the country's got a big crisis and lots of people don't have a job. However, this has been very positive for big supermarkets or department stores, due to the fact that they've got competitive prices, which are very attractive.

On the one hand, supermarkets have got lower prices, and people go there so as not to spend loads of money buying food. Moreover, you've got more privacy because the staff don't know who you are and they can't tell your family if you buy alcohol or condoms, and you can find all sort of things there.

On the other hand, this kind of shops are not near the city centre, so people have to go there by car (as they can't go by bus because they'll have to carry at least four or five bags), and they spend the money they save buying there on petrol, which is very expensive. Furthermore, the products people get may not be fresh, or can be past the sell-by-date.

In conclusion, it's positive to buy at supermarkets because you can save money, buy you can find better quality products in corner shops, which are nearer than the others.

BUYING IN BIG SUPERMARKETS

When you have to buy some things you usually go to a big supermarket, but are they actually better than small shops? The number of supermarkets is increasing, let's see their advantages and disadvantages.

First of all, it is more comfortable to go to a big supermarket because you can find anything you want there, they have a huge variety of products. Another advantage is that the prices are usually very cheap, and you can find lots of offers as well. And finally, you can buy anything you want because no one who works there knows you.

On the other hand, you can't find fresh products because big supermarkets have everything packed. For example, fresh fruits and vegetables aren't as good as in small shops. Furthermore, the quality of their products is not the best. Lastly, in big supermarkets you don't have personal attention because you don't know the people who work there.

To sum up, from my point of view big supermarkets have more advantages than disadvantages. I think they are better, and you can find one anywhere.
Nowadays, after "the boom" of big supermarkets instead of corner shops, there are a lot of points of view about advantages and disadvantages of shopping in this kind of shops.

On the one hand, supermarkets offer a wide variety of products. First of all, you can look for sophisticated food depending on your needs or wishes. Secondly because of the variety, you can buy whatever you want in one supermarket or another. What's more, there are lower prices and sales as well. Sometimes if you're a bit stressed, the staff may advise you about the best products.

On the other hand, something that doesn't happen in corner shops, is that the products in a supermarket may be past the sell-by date or not fresh. You can't come later to pay if you have run out of money at that moment. The main counterargument is that if you need something faster, you must move, may be kilometres, and you waste more time.

In conclusion, supermarkets are useful if you are looking for lower prices, sales, variety or whatever, because they offer us lots of products, but sometimes you can't do she shopping quietly, so you become angry, but people are be able to find whatever they want easily.

Shopping in big supermarkets

Nowadays there are more and more big supermarkets and the number of people shopping on there is increasing. Is it good?

In our days people are always in a hurry and they need an easy way to shop. This is the main reason for the increase of shopping in big supermarkets. What's more, in there the food or other products are cheaper than in other little shops. People think that there you can find whatever you want and you don't have to look for different small shops.

On the other hand, big supermarkets are replacing the little shops where you used to buy and the people who worked there have lost their job. In other words it increases the number of unemployed people. What's more, the items of big supermarkets are unnatural products, which can be unhealthy. Most of them can make you ill.

In my opinion, people should be more precautious with their food and they should be more healthy. In addition I think that people can buy in big supermarkets if they don't forget the little shops and they continue buying healthy items. We have to live with less stress.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SHOPPING IN A BIG SUPERMARKET

Shopping in big supermarkets instead of buying in small town shops is a topic which has caused a great debate. Shopping in big supermarkets has advantages and disadvantages.

To begin with, some people think that shopping in a big supermarket is much better as you can find nearly all the products you need in the same building and you don't have to spend your time going from one shop to another.Furthermore, in big supermarkets you can find a great variety of products as well as items which are cheaper than in other small shops. Another advantage of buying in supermarkets is that nearly all of them have their own free car park so that you can park just next to the building without having to pay.

Even though people prefer to buy in big supermarkets , others like shopping in small shops. They think quality of products at supermatkets isn't as good as in small shops. What's more, in big supermarkets you don't have individual attention and most shop assistants don't know you so they can't give you advice.Another disadvantage of buying in supermarkets is that if you don't have enough money on you, you won't be able to pay another day.

In conclusion, I think it's better to shop at a supermarket because of the variety of products you can choose and as I said before you don't spend so much time. Furthermore, if you are in a rush, the shop assistant won't have you on gossiping about people in town!

Advantages and disatvantages of shopping in supermarkets

In the last few years big supermarkets have become more and more important. But in the past people did not have these supermarkets so they went to little shops. Nowadays some people still go shopping in these corner shops but supermarkets are more important. So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of shopping in big supermarkets?
One advantage of buying in supermarkets like Mercadona or Lidl is that if you go there you can buy all the products you need in the same place. This does not happen if you buy in a little corner shop because they don't have so many goods.

Another advantage is that products in big supermarkets are cheaper than in little shops. Although in little shops employers know you . This could be bad, because if you are a teenager and you buy a beer or something everybody will know it.

A disadvantage of shopping in big supermarkets is that you are anonymus for workers so you won't recieve the same treatment than in a little shop which could be good as well, because you may do not have enough money to pay something and in a little corner shop they might allow you to pay another day.

To sum up, i think that there are more advantages than disadvantages of buying in big supermarkets and definitly I believe that it is much better to shop in Mercadona, for example, than in little shops.

 Shopping in supermarkets

Nowadays, there are a lot of supermarkets in the same town. For example, in Mahón, a little town, there are four big supermarkets, binipreu, mercadona, lidl and erosky.

In a big supermarket you can find a lot of different things like food, clothes, snacks, fruit, machines, etc. The prices are cheaper in a big supermarket than in other supermarkets which are smaller like spar. Moreover, in these supermarkets there are a lot of people to help you if you don't know where the products that you are looking for are. In addition, these places are always very clean.

However, there are disadvantages too. The quality of the products ins't always very good. Furthermore, usually in the supermarket there are a lot of people and if you want to buy only product you spend a lot of time there. Moreover, when you have finished shopping you have to wait for a lot of time because there are long queues.

Finally, big supermarkets are a good idea in a big town but I think in a small town don't need them. Perhaps you need one or two but five or six is a horrible idea because there aren't enough people for so many supermarkets.

Supermarkets

There are diffrent types of supermarkets, big, small, specialized, etc. People, normally, buy in shops where the employees are the best and products are great, but this changes depending on whether a  supermarket is big or small.

On the one hand a corner shop is better because the steff know you and they are more polite and friendly with you. Moreover, they can put aside the products that you normally buy. Another advantage is that the meat, fish and fruit are fresher than in big supermarkets. However in big supermarkets there are more diffrent offers and products.

In the other hand, in a small supermarket people know you and your family and if you buy condons or something like that the steff can tell your mother about it. In big supermarkets you have privacy but you have to wait a lot to pay.

To sump up, there are corner shops and big supermarkets. In my opinion you choose depending on the product that you want.

Big supermarkets

.Nowadays, there are one or two Mercadona or Lidl in every city, even in Mahón, which is a small city. But is it good buy things in a big supermarket for the economy? Is the service better than in corner shops?

On the one hand, in big supermarkets there are a lot of kinds of foods, such as Japonese food, Italian food or maybe, even clothes. In addition, because of the competice, the prices are cheaper than in other supermarkets. And also, big supermarkets have a car park, which is comfortable for the customers, if it rains.

On the other hand, in big supermarkets there are a lot of people and the queues are very long and you have to wait for a long time to pay. Furthemore, very often in a big supermarket the service is very bad and finally you can't find the things that you're looking for. And also, when the employees deal with us, they are very serious, and they don't seem friendly.

In conclusion, in big supermarkets there are a lot of things everywhere and sometimes it's difficult to find something. I prefer a good service than cheaper things.

SUPERMARKETS

Nowadays, more and more big supermarkets are being built in big cities, and also in little towns, like the new supermarket "Mercadona" in Mahon. This gives people more choices when they want to buy something on different places attending to the complicated echonomic situation that we are living in.

On the one hand, big supermarkets offer a wide variety of products so that consumers can choose what is more convenient for them, comparing the quality of goods and obviously the price. You can have a good time if you want to spend an hour with your family or friends shopping at supermarkets to relax and go out and see people. This allows people to socialize a bit more.

On the other hand, buying in supermarket can suppose a little problem if you don't have enough time to go shopping or if you don't have enough money to buy what you really need. Also it can be stressful to buy in a building which is crowded with people and maybe the quality of products don't correspond to theis prices, and this really annoys the consumers.

To sum up, I think that supermarkets are the best choice for people who are looking for quality and variety at the best price. Consequently, more customers are always coming back almost every week because it's a faster and an easier way to make their huge shopping.

Supermakerts

Supermarkets have spread almost all over the world becoming par of our routines. Most of us buy all kind of stuff in them. But which are the advantages and disadvantages.

The main advantage is that all you need is int the same building: there's a butcher, fruit, all kind of food and also hygienic stuff we need. This way, it's enough to visit our nearest supermarket approximately once a week. This makes us, obviously, save a lot of time. Prices are also very attractive. As supermarkets have great stocks and don't  need many people, they're able to make their products cost decrease. We're not only saving time, but also money.

Despite these advantages, we don't always know where our food comes from. Things  such as meat or fruit can come from far far away. Instead of buying our local products, we're consuming foregin products which we don't know how exactly they've been treted. This makes our local buissineses have problems or even disappear. These great surfaces don't employ many people either, they don't need many employees, who aren't paid very well.

To conclude, perhaps we should buy in smaller town shops, which ensure local quality products. Furthemore, many little shops need some more employees than a big supermarket. It may not be so cheap, but at least we'll know where the food comes from and that we're helping our local area to improve.

Advantages and disadvantages of shopping in supermarkets

When you need something you can try to shop in a big supermarket or in a little shop. There are some advantages and disadvantages of shopping in big supermarkets, and now we’re going to see them.

The main advantage is that in a big supermarket you can find a lot of products and a wide variety of the same product. You can also compare prices. Another advantage is that big supermarkets are open more time, so you have more time to buy something if you need it.

On the other hand, we have the disadvantages. The main disadvantage is that we are contributing to finish with little shops. Another important disadvantage is that a big percentage of the price of a product of a big supermarket is for taxes.

To sum up, the advantage of shopping in big supermarkets is that in a big supermarket the products are cheaper and the disadvantage is that it is prejudicial to little shops.

BUYING IN SUPERMARKETS

Nowadays in all the cities there is at least one supermarket, which is a big department store where you can buy lots of things. And there are some people for and against building them.

On the one hand, in thins type of supermarkets you have all the things you need in the same place, you don't have to waste time going to different shops. Another argument for is that prices are normally lower, or they have some offers because of the competition between different supermarkets. And finally it gives jobs to a lot of people, because normally supermarket is a very big place where they need cleaners, some sellers, etc.

On the other hand, the argument against, are that it takes a lot of space to build it, and sometimes they destroy some natural areas. And normally in supermarkets the meat, fish and vegetables don’t have a good quality and you have to move to another shop. And lastly they compete with little shops because they have better prices.

In conclusion, I am for supermarkets because they are useful , and you don’t have o waste time buying I think it is right to have in a village but not more because it is excessive.

SHOPPING

Many people go shopping in supermarkets, because they think that shopping in supermarkets is better than shopping in little shop. But, is it true?

On the one hand, it's true that in a big supermarket you can find more shops, therefore, you can buy different articles, for example, you can buy food, dresses as well as electronic objects. Moreover, if you are tired, you can go to restaurant and you can eat or drink something there, in addition to relax. Another advantatge is that sometimes, in some bigs shops, for intance Carrefour, you can find the same articles less expensive than in little shops.

On the other hand, in these big supermarkets there are more peolpe than in little shops. In addition, people have to go by car or by train, because the big supermarkets isn't near the city and is more difficult to arrive there. Finally, in big supermarkets there are more cases of shop lifting than in little shops, since there are more people and it's more difficult to find them out.

In conclusion, if you want to buy more articles for your house it is better to go shopping in a big supermarket, but if you only want to buy a dress or T-shirt, you'd better go shopping in little shop, although you can buy them in a big supermarket too.

Shopping in supermarkets

Big supermarkets like Lidl or Mercadona are becoming more common in a lot of cities. Moreover, their prices are more competitive every day, but little shops aren’t having a good time, because nowadays big ones are extremely popular.

On the one hand, big supermarkets can offer very cheap and good products, and it is an advantage for consumers because of their financial problems. They are also better organized and you are able to buy all kind of items in the same buildings. Moreover, they are usually open more time than little shops and they’ve got a parking where you can park your car near the supermarket, which is very comfortable because of the heavy transport of the products purchased.

On the other hand, big supermarkets can offer cheaper products with less employees. Therefore, there are more people without jobs than if there were a lot of little shops. Moreover, the products sold in big supermarkets aren’t usually from the area where the supermarket is. For this reason, buying them, we don’t help the local economy.

To sum up, big supermarkets are very comfortable and competitive. However, their consequences can make little shops go down. Therefore, increase financial problems.

Shopping in supermarkets

It’s a fact that we all buy a lot of products in big supermarkets, but we don’t know many of the advantages and disadvantages they have.

Supermarkets have got amounts of different products from different producers, so the first advantage is that we can find and choose the good we want comparing prices and other qualities. Moreover, as there are a lot of supermarkets trying to catch shoppers, the prices are more competitive and we can find cheaper items. Another advantage is that they are perfect for us if we ant to do a big shopping once or twice a week. Consequently, we have more time to do other things. Big supermarkets also have some alternative places like restaurant, coffee shops… that are good for us if we need to spend a lot of time there.

But shopping in supermarkets also has disadvantages. Firs of all, small businesses are damaged if we all shop in supermarkets. Then, there is the problem of time. Big supermarkets are usually located far away from our homes, so we need to use the car to carry our shopping. What’s more, as the supermarkets have long corridors, we will spend much more time trying to find what we ant and, as they’re usually crowded, we will have to wait for long queues. Apart from this, as supermarkets have amounts of products, the quantity seems to be more important than the quality, so some products such as meat, fish, fruit, etc. may not be healthy enough for us.

To sum up, supermarkets are useful if we need to make big and cheaper shoppings, and bad if we search quality products.

Shopping in supermarkets

Nowadays people have stopped going to little shops to go to big supermarkets because of the variety of products, the price, etc.

On the one hand, in a supermarket there's more variety and quantity of products which are normally cheaper than in a little shop as they have the same product made by different factories and some of them are cheaper than the most famous. Moreover, if you want to buy premade food, a supermarket is the best place to go to.

On the other hand, there might be some problems with food which is supposed to be fresh in a supermarket, such as fruit, fish... There are more problems to have it fresh than in a town shop. Furthermore, when you get to pay the goods, there's always a long queue and you have to wait for a long time.

To sum up, I think it's OK to go and do the shopping in a supermarket maybe once a week, to buy the most important things you need and then, if you need something in special during the week go and buy it in a little shop.

Advantages and Disadvantages of supermarkets

A supermarket is a building in which you can buy all kinds of alimentary products like bread, meat, fish, vegetables... Nowadays there are becoming very popular because the people who buy there think that it is more comfortable to buy in this big stores than in little ones.

One advantage of this type of shops is that it's easier to buy in them because they are very big and spacious. Buying in supermarkets takes less time than doing it in little shops, because there are more parking places in big ones. But the most important advantage is that supermarkets are very cheap because most of them have their own brands (they can sell their own products cheaper than others that are made by another business or factory.

The main disadvantage, in the case of Menorca, is that supermarkets whose owners are foreign people, usually take the benefits out of the island. Another disadvantage could be that these king of shops make the little ones disappear, giving less workplaces to people. The final disadvantage is that these lack of work can't be compensated by the workplaces that a supermarket gives, and, because of that, lots of people are against these big stores.

I think supermarkets have more disadvantages that advantages, because people who usually go to these big stores buy more than they need because of the amount of cheap products that these kind of shops have.

Supermarkets

Supermarkets are big places where we find a lot of products, we have a very big choice. Supermarkets have been created to allow people to do massive shopping and have access to any kind of products in the same place.

Supermarkets are very important now a days because people live very fast, we havne't enough time to waste it. We work a lot, moreover we have children who want to eat and we have to look after so supermarkets help make our like easier. Moreover, you can find a lot of products at a low price. So it's better for us, concretly now, in times of crisis. Another important thing is taht supermarkets are an opportunity to find a job.

Not everything is so good, the problem in supermarkets is you don't know the origin of some products like meat, fish...  Packed products aren't a problem but fresh products, are. Another problem is that supermarkets destroy local shops because they aren't so cheap.

To sum up, supermarkets have good things and bat things but good things are represent more advantages than bad things.
Supermarkets are big places where we find a lot of products, we have a very big choice. Supermarkets have been created to allow people to do massive shopping and have access to any kind of products in the same place.

Shopping in supermarkets

Nowadays, there are many more big supermarkets than a few years ago, while there are less and less small shops. People have got used to shopping in this kind of supermarkets instead of in the small ones.

First of all, the products are usually cheaper, as they buy them in big amounts and get a discount for it. Besides, you can find a lot of different brands of the items, so you can choose the cheapest one of all, or the best known one. In addition, since they have all kinds of goods, you can find whatever you are looking for, so it's possible to buy enough products in order not to have to go to other places (you can purchase it all in just one go).

On the other hand, having all kinds of stuff also means that the supermarket is not focused on just one or two aspects. Everything is generic, you can't find anything specific or really good. For instance, fruit from a fruit shop is always much better than the one you can find in the supermarket. Besides, in supermarkets there are always a lot of people, so it's uncomfortable and unconvenient if you don't have much time.

In conclusion, supermarkets are fine if you need to get something basic, like shampoo, cookies or soap. But, for things like fruit, vegetables or meat, it is always better to go to small shops, as their quality is better. As long as you keep that in mind, you'll be able to get the best products from both places.

Advantages and disadvantages of buying in supermakets

Nowadays there are plenty of big supermarkets such as LIDL or Mercadona where lately, because of the economical crisis, more and more people go to buy items but, what are the advantages of shopping there?

First of all, these places are cheaper than little stores because there's the presence of brands such as Hacendado that are produced by other firms but are sold as Hacendado. Also, in big supermarkets there are all kind of products and it's easier to buy everything at once. This attracts lots of families that usually go to buy only once a week or once a month because they buy everything they need at once, so they don't have to go shopping everyday.

On the other hand, most of these supermarkets aren't located in the city and a car is needed to get there. This means that people that haven't got a car can't go there and buy.

To sum up, there are more advantages than desavantages when talking about shopping in supermarkets. Buying there is cheaper and it's easier to get all the products you need, however, they aren't located in the city and it makes it more difficult to get there.

The variety of supermarkets

A supermarket is a place where people go to buy food and many other things. There are little markets, normal markets, markets which are placed on the street and the supermarkets which are known as big department stores.

The main advantage of having a huge variety of supermarkets is that you can compare prices, so you're able to buy the cheapest product. What's more, as there are so  many, you'll always find what you want, since there are, more or less, four supermarkets in your town. Furthermore, you can walk to them.

On the other hand, having this variety of supermarkets makes people confused, because they don't know where to go, since nthere are many choices. Because of people have compared prices between supermarkets, sometimes they go to three different stores. Since there are big department stores, little markets have disappeared, because they can't afford it.

To sum up, as there are several kinds of supermarkets with all sort of products, people are able to find what they want easily.

SHOPPING IN SUPERMARKETS OPINION ESSAY

Nowadays, most people prefer to go to big supermarkets rather than the small ones to buy their meat, fruit, fish, shampoo, etc. But there are still people that to to the small supermarkets because of the disadvantages of the big ones.

People that go to the big supermarkets think that the supermarkets are very useful because they can but everything they need at once. And there is also more coice, there are lots of products and most of these big supermarkets have contact with supermarkets from other places, which they get products from. So, if you need any product that is not made in Menorca, you'll problably find it in a big supermarket, like the new "Mercadona" or "The Lidl".

On the other hand, some people don't like to go to these big supermarkets because there are a lot of people, which is really stressful, and therefore you've also got to wait longer before it's your turn when you order something or when you want to pay what you've bought. Another disadvantage of the big supermarkets, is that the meat or fish is not fresh, and small supermarkets do have fresh food because the products are made in Menorca.

So, like everything, these big supermarkets have also got their disadvantages, but they are usually succesful.

TOMBSTONING AND BALCONING

Spanish tourism authorities warn of more deaths in 'balconing' game

Balconing” accidents jump on Spain’s holiday isles

Tombstoning is the name given to the crazy act of jumping from cliffs and monuments along the seashore in the UK. The aptly named sport indicates the danger of the activity, which some Brits refer to as the sport of drunken idiots.
Although this ridiculous activity has taken many lives over the past few years, an outdoor pursuits organization is still holding to the claim that it is safely supervised. They suggest that people who want to experience the rush and thrill should do so in controlled conditions. Of the deaths that occurred, 75 percent were men and drinking was listed as a factor for many of their fatal jumps.

SHOPPING : VOCABULARY AND LISTENING PRACTICE

LISTENING
VOCABULARY

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SMALL SHOPS AND DEPARTAMENT STORES OR SUPERMARKETS

WHERE IS IT BETTER TO DO THE SHOPPING- IN SUPERMARKETS OR IN SMALL SHOPS?

It is very difficult to say definitely, which place is better to do the shopping. There are many good and bad points of both- supermarkets and corner shops.

The staff in corner shops is usually very nice. People, who sell in these shops know most of their customers. They may advice you what to buy, they know what your favourite products are. If it happens that you don't have enough money to buy something, they may let you pay later. You can always talk to the staff and you can be sure that you buy fresh products. Nevertheless, if you want to buy something in secret, you shouldn't do it in the small shop next to your house. The shop assistant may tell your parents, that you bought a beer or cigarettes. Another disadvantage is that there is not as much wide variety of different products there as there is in supermarkets. If you have some special needs and wishes, you’d better go to supermarket to look for it.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SUPERMARKETS?

It is hard to say which kind of shop is better. Both a corner shop and a supermarket have many advantages and disadvantages.

The corner shop is generally small and has friendly staff. Because it is not as big, you cannot find sophisticated products as you can find in a supermarket. The staff usually knows you very well. They know what your favourite products are, they can put aside things that you want to buy if you do not have enough money. It is very nice and useful. But on the other hand it is very hard to keep something in secret. For example it is really difficult to buy beer, cigarettes or condoms without the shop assistant telling your mother or gossip about you.

The supermarket is bigger than the corner shop and is better equipped. More people go to this kind of shop. Everybody is anonymous for the shop assistant and generally prices are lower. The competition of supermarkets is very good for customer. But despite these advantages the supermarket has also got few disadvantages. A lot of products are not fresh. They are displayed on the shelves waiting for a customer to get them and sometimes they are there for a very long time and past the sell-by date.

To sum up, both supermarkets and corner shops have many advantages and disadvantages. I choose one or the other depending on the kind of product I want to buy.

THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF DEPARTAMENTAL STORES

Advantages

The various advantages of a departmental store are:

i. The customer is spared from the botheration of going to different places to get his desired articles as most of are found in a departmental store.

ii. Since the departmental store goes for huge purchases, it avails a good number of trade discounts which help to reduce the selling price of the products. (the selling price per unit becomes very low because of large volume of sales).

iii. They ensure the quality of products and have a wide variety to choose from.

iv. A departmental store can afford to advertise on large scale and thereby attracts a large number of customers.

v. A departmental store can afford to employ specialists which provide expert knowledge on various functions.

Disadvantages

A departmental store suffers from the following disadvantages:

i. People living at a distant place cannot avail the advantages of departmental store because these are located in the cities.

ii. The cost of running the departmental store is higher because of certain free services which they give. The cost of free services is high and therefore it increases the prices of the product.

iii. The cost of advertisement and publicity is much higher.

iv. Customers are not given individual attention because these establishments are too large.

ADVANTAGES OF DEPARTMENT STORES

For a lot of people shopping is a chore, something tedious, like housework. For others, shopping is fun and relaxing, a release from the world of work. But the question is Where should we do the shopping ? In a department store or in a small corner shop. There are advantages and disadvantages of both types of shops.

Nowadays it is hard to imagine our life without shopping at department stores. From the moment shoppers step out of their cars or off the bus that has brought them to the department store, they are encouraged to feel relaxed. Soft music is everywhere, security cameras monitor every inch of the store. And everywhere is so clean, including the air within the giant building which is continuously renewed by tireless air-conditioning systems.
One of the basic reasons for the popularity of department stores is the enormous variety of shops that are to be found under one vast roof.

There are several major departments and supermarkets. An equally important part of the department store is smaller shops and boutiques, whose glistening displays invite shoppers. Inside there everyone can find books, expensive china, designer clothes, casual wear. A typical supermarket has separate sections for such products as meat, fruit and vegetables, biscuits and cakes canned food, tea and coffee, soft drinks, washing powder. Most goods in supermarkets are pre-packed, weighed and priced before they are put on the display. Supermarkets provide convenient and speedy shopping.

Non-stop shopping can be tiring, but there are a lot of other things to do in dep. stores as well. Many people come to eat and drink as much as to shop as there are a lot of coffee bars, wine bars and restaurants where people can sit and chat with their fellow shoppers.
It is a fact that children hate being dragged round shops, and here surely is another reason for the increasing popularity of dep. stores. Their designers make sure that children are certainly not forgotten. Adventure rides, animal exhibits, cinemas or skate rings are just examples of the entertainment provided by stores.
Of course, these facilities exist for one basic reason: to make shoppers need some extra cash for few unplanned items when the store offers bargains. For large purchase customers may use credit cards.
So it seems that a department store is a wonderful fantasy land for adults and children. It is somewhere we can go to if we want to get away from a miserable, wet winter or the uncomfortable heat of summer.
It is needless to mention that many people still prefer to do the shopping in traditional shops.

ADVANTAGES OF SUPERMARKETS

Let's be honest, life without supermarkets would be hell. Thanks to their existence, what used to take all day now takes a couple of hours. Thirty years ago, by the time you had walked up and down the high street, visited a host of stores, queued at counters and checkouts and then trekked back home with as many bags as you could carry, the day was more or less over. And stores only opened nine to five.

Now, responding to consumer demand, supermarkets operate extended opening hours and trade on Sundays. The number of lines stocked has also increased out of all recognition. Supermarkets now offer the choice of up to 40,000 lines - everything from economy to niche products at very competitive prices; they provide free car-parking and a number of other facilities such as financial services. They also sell a superb range of own labels, and offer home deliveries and internet shopping.

Generally, none of us has to drive too far to get to the supermarket: we find them out-of-town or on the high street. A number of retailers are looking at even more convenient outlets in railway stations. Thirty years ago, customers would have given their right hand to shop in these sort of outlets, which we now take for granted.

AGAINST SUPERMARKETS

Most people who can, choose to shop in supermarkets for many different reasons. Society now depends on them. They are here to stay.

But the argument has to move on. The country is saturated with superstores. Now is the time to count the cost of this convenience. The forces driving the supermarkets to ever-fiercer competition and increasing vertical concentration can also increase social deprivation and destroy the enabling structure of our local food economies which sustain our market towns and villages, the food producers who supply them and the people who depend on them.

Remember that there are consumers who exist beyond the rosy glow of the supermarket - those who have no car, who are not on the internet, who live in a cash economy, whose shopping budgets are too small to qualify for home deliveries, who need their local shop for social contact and conversation. And don't forget the local food producers. Virtually all food production starts small-scale and depends on small retail outlets.

In east Suffolk, following the threat of a superstore, I surveyed 81 food shops and discovered they were sourcing food from 295 local producers. When superstores open, small shops close. Small shops, farms and food businesses are interdependent, providing employment and consumer choice. They are the basis of the rural economy. The way forward is to ensure we have the framework in place that enables the supermarkets to co-exist with the parallel integrated local economy, rather than compete with it until it is destroyed.
