It had been almost four weeks since the HMS Allende had been sunk by the worst storm in years. According to the chart, we were somewhere 300 miles east of Palleck in an inhabited island we'd later know as Nahulu. Over time, Schmidt's behavior became erratic and he convinced himself and other people that the only way to end that divine punishment was to shed the blood of those who didn't follow the righteous path of the Lord. One night, he volunteered to watch the camp, and, while everyone was sleeping, he went straight to Ampeela's tent and slashed her throat. A war started the next day between Smichdt's followers and the rest of the crew, including the natives we had picked up in Maoro, who were Ampeela's family.
By the time the HMS Challenger found Nahulu, there were only thirteen of us left. Schmidt and his men had been defeated but we had to pay with our lives.
