The Observer view on the human tragedy in the Mediterranean

  1. This is a really difficult situation. It's hard to find a win-win solution if not impossible.

First of all, if Europe stopped admitting African immigrants into their borders, it wouldn't be fair to the newcomers since it is partly because of European wealthy nations that Africa is ruled by poverty (there cannot be wealth if there's no poverty. Europe gained its current thriving status by exploiting African natural resources without paying much back).

Second, every person has a right to live wherever they want to since Earth belongs to all of humanity.

However, if we allow the thousands of immigrants to come live in Europe, soon we'll find ourselves craving for jobs, and we are already doing that.

So, there's no way in which both Europeans and Africans can benefit. In a perfect world, the EU wouldn't be so rich and Africa wouldn't be so poor. The world would be balanced. But, currently, the only way Africans can improve their living conditions means Europeans will see their living conditions worsened. Balancing wealth is difficult today since the unbalance is deep in mankind's roots.
